Computer skills are not enough in today's employment environment - you will need a minimum of an A+ certification and a Network+ certification to be hired; or to retain your job, even if you are already employed!! A+ certification and N+ certification (also known as Net+ certification or Network+ certification - the official term, from CompTIA is Network+ certification, but most people just say N+) are great starter certifications for career changers - and, in many Tidewater Job opportunities, these will be REQUIRED by your future employer(s).  Most of the Tidewater Virginia IT employers must abide by DoD, DoT, State Deparment, or some other federal agency rules, to retain their ability to bid (or their hope to bid) on government contracts.  Check out the DoD 8570 IT mandate HERE.  In short, EVERY employer who has computer techs who have anything to do with government computers MUST HAVE EVERY TECHNICIAN CERTIFIED, or that company will lose their ability to retain existing contracts - or bid on new ones.  (Would anybody care to bet that, rather than lose their ability to bid -- they will start delivering pink-slips to computer techs, who are not certified).  You old timers, pay attention too - it says "every technician."  It is not enough that you know it - you will have to prove it, with a certification. If you already have significant basic computer skills, you may be able to self-study and pass the A+ certification exams (It's a tough cert, even if you are highly skilled in computer basic skills) - many people try to self-study and give up.  Don't give up!  Sign up for instructor-led A+ certification training, and, at HyperLearning Technologies, most obtain your certification 2 weeks after completing the A+ training course. Even if you are currently employed in an IT job, you will likely be REQUIRED by your employer to get a N+ certification, in order to retain your job.  DoD Instruction 8570.01-M is being implemented this year.  This DoD Information Assurance - IAT - Workforce Improvement Program is a MANDATE, to all employers who have any IT employees involved in DoD systems that A+ certifications, and N+ certifications are REQUIRED for all IT technicians, and Security+ certifications are required for all supervisory IT technicians.  I do not have a crystal ball, but even if your employer is not currently involved with DoD, I expect most employers to make A+ CERTIFICATIONS (not equivalent skills) and N+ certifications a minimum requirement for employment. HyperLearning's N+ certification program is approved by the Opportunity Inc, Workforce Development, WIA, Veterans Administration -VA- Vocational Rehab, and the Virginia Vocational rehabilitation programs for financial assistance, if you are eligible.
