Certifications are recognized as critical for job placement in today’s IT hiring environment. The American Council on Education (ACE) has recommended college credit for select Microsoft Certifications. Approved certifications are applicable to one to six semester hours of college credit in bachelor’s-degree or associate-degree classes. Old Dominion University, Tidewater Community College and Thomas Nelson Community College are three local schools who have agreed to consider certification for credit. As you are aware, effective January 1, 2011, all new CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+ (and CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner) certifications will be valid for three years from the date the candidate is certified. The certification must be renewed within three years in order for the individual to remain certified.

These certifications can be maintained by enrolling in CompTIA’s Continuing Education (CE) Program or by passing the most current CompTIA exam prior to the three-year expiration date.
