Dual boot XP and Vista Dual booting Windows XP and Vista depends which operating system is installed first. If you are doing a virgin install, create two partitions, the first one on the disk will become the XP, and the next partition will become the Vista. Just remember to install the OLDER OS first, as usual. If XP is installed, just boot with the Windows Vista install DVD, select custom install, and install Vista on a separate partition or physical drive. To get a separate partition, you will probably need a Partition Magic or clone.  With today's prices, just pick up a new drive for Vista, and install on that drive. (I HIGHLY recommend a dual booting option, if you have sufficient disk space - you WILL need to revert back to XP, from time-to-time, in most situations. When you no longer need XP, you can just abandon it - or delete it.)  If Vista is already installed: Boot the computer with a Windows XP CD and install Windows XP to a different partition or physical drive. When the setup is finished, your computer will boot into Windows XP. (When you installed XP, the Vista Boot Manager was replaced by the Windows XP boot sector.) Boot using the Windows Vista DVD, click Next on the regional settings screen, click on "Repair your computer." Select the Windows Vista installation, then run Startup Repair. This fixes the Vista Boot Manager and Vista will now start at boot time. To add an entry to the Vista Boot Manager to dual-boot to Windows XP.  In Vista, open a command prompt, using an administrative escalation (right click Command Prompt and click "Run as administrator" from the shortcut menu), run: bcdedit /create {ntldr} /d “Windows XP” bcdedit /set {ntldr} device boot bcdedit /set {ntldr} path \ntldr bcdedit /displayorder {ntldr} /addlast Note: You may see, in the literature, examples which use a long hexadecimal GUID in the curly brackets {}. {ntldr} is an alias for the well-known NTLDR GUID. Reboot. Dual boot should be a boot option.
