What is a PMI Credential certification?
The Project Management Institute (PMI ®) is the world’s leading association for the program management and project management profession. It administers a globally recognized, rigorous, education, and/or professional experience and examination-based professional credentialing program that maintains an ISO 9001 certification in Quality Management Systems.

Earning a PMP or CAPM professional credential through PMI means that one has:

  • Demonstrated the appropriate education and/or professional experience;
  • Completed the required number of hours of project management certification training courses;
  • Passed a rigorous examination;
  • Agreed to abide by a professional code of conduct;
  • Committed to maintaining their active credential through meeting continuing certification requirements.

PMI professional credentials — available to members of the Institute and nonmembers alike — are widely recognized and accepted throughout the world as evidence of a proven level of education, knowledge and experience in project management.

  • According to polling by Forrester Research Inc., the pressure to deliver projects on time and on budget puts project management skills atop the list of hiring priorities for a majority of CIOs in 2007. In fact, 59% tell the Cambridge, Mass.-based research firm they plan to train their staff in project management this year; another 29% said they will hire project managers.
  • But the talent, Forrester said, is in short supply.

HyperLearning Technologies offers two of the PMI credentials, each aimed at two levels of entry.  For each credential we offer a package of project management professional courses, with the necessary pre-requisites in project management fundamentals and desktop project management, and another without the preliminary training, for those candidates already possess these skills.  We offer a basic package and a professional package for each credential.

These include:

The candidate should be aware that HyperLearning (and nobody else) is authorized to grant PMI certifications.  These certifications are strictly controlled by PMI.  Even taking the certification exam must be approved by PMI.  The role that HyperLearning's experienced PMP will play will be to present the fundamental materials and offer assistance in applying for the credential.  PMI pre-screens candidates, before they are allowed to sit for a certification Exam.

In support of the PMP and CAPM programs, Hyperlearning Technologies also provides a one-day project management fundamentals course, and both levels of Microsoft's MS Project training.  These are all one-day courses.

Project Management Fundamentals is exactly that - it is not specific to any software.  It relates to the vocabulary of the PM and the things that must be managed.  This is primarily a lecture-based course.

MS Project 2003 Level 1 training is software-specific and focuses on how to set up and process a project, when everything goes according to plan.  Multiple projects, shared resources, and problem solving are left to the MS Microsoft Office Project Level 2 course.

The Microsoft Office Project Level 2 training is a continuation of Project level 1, and should not be attempted, without first completing the MS Project Level 1 course (unless the student is well-versed in using MS Project 2003 for project management.  MS Project 2003 Level 2 training focuses on multiple projects, shared resources, projects that are outside of the defined schedules for the critical path, over-committed resource leveling and day-to-day problem solving.

Candidates who already possess the requisite skills in project management, and need no refresher, can go directly into the CAPM or PMI program, without taking these skill-building courses.

How do you earn your credential?
To be eligible for a PMP® or CAPM® credential, you must first meet specific educational and/or project management experience requirements and agree to adhere to a code of professional conduct. The final step in gaining your credential is a rigorous multiple-choice examination designed to objectively assess your project management knowledge. The PMP examination utilizes scenario or application-based questions where practitioners are asked to apply their knowledge to specific situations. The CAPM examination utilizes definition type of questions assessing candidates’ knowledge of project management terms and context in which project management is practiced.

Everything you need to know about PMI’s exams:
PMI ® develops its PMP and CAPM credential examinations based on examination specifications. These documents are derived from globally validated research processes that clearly set the credentials apart from other project management certifications. By identifying the globally-validated tasks, knowledge and skills involved in leading and directing project tasks (PMP), and tasks, knowledge and skills involved in managing programs (new credential), PMI ensures that our examinations have content validity. And that’s important because it assures you that you passed an examination that demonstrates that you have the knowledge from which you can competently practice as a project manager (PMP), that you have demonstrated knowledge about project management terms and contexts as contained in the PMBOK ® Guide

Which credential is right for me?  Should I go for the PMP or the CAPM?
The answer to this is more a function of the amount of experience that you have in the field, than the training that you take.  Both credentials take their exam material from the MPBOK Guide, which is the basis of HyperLearning's PMP/CAPM training program.  According to PMI's website:

Project Management Professional (PMP)
If you enjoy the prestige that comes from being the best in your field, then you’ll appreciate the professional advantages derived from attaining PMP status. A PMP credential grants an applicant with a globally recognized designation that serves as the foundation from which they can competently practice as a project manager leading and directing project tasks. PMPs are in tune with the latest trends in the project management profession. And they have demonstrated their commitment to the profession. The PMP designation following your name tells current and potential employers that you have a solid foundation of project management knowledge that can be readily applied in the workplace.
